itinerary

Route: CUSCO-PITUMARCA-QUESOYUNI-VINICUNCA
Duration: 12 hours
Difficulty: Moderate

  • Early in the morning, at 4:40 am, we will pick up at your hotel and embark on a journey by tourist transport through the southern valley, passing through colonial-era villages and large haciendas heading towards the town of Cheqacupe. After half an hour, we will arrive at Pitumarca, which tells us that we are getting closer and closer to the rainbow mountain, known as “Vinicunca”. From this point, the road becomes dirt as we head to the town of Hanchipata, where we will have our breakfast. The weather at this point is a bit cool. We will continue with transport to the town of Quesoyuni, the checkpoint for the rainbow mountain. From here, we will begin our hike to the top of the mountain, reaching an altitude of 5,100 meters above sea level.
  • 8:30 a.m. We will prepare ourselves together with our guide and muleteers, who will accompany us to the top of Vinicunca or the mountain of colors. The first part of the hike is on flat terrain covered with grass, where thousands of alpacas and llamas graze. We will also meet shepherds and people who still wear their native costumes.
  • 9:00 a.m. We will begin the climb uphill, from where you can see the sacred mountains of Ausangate and the Vilcanota mountain range.
  • 10:00 a.m. This is the time when we will reach the mythical foothills of the colorful mountain. With a little effort, we will begin the climb to the summit (5,100 meters), from where you will be able to appreciate the majesty of the colored mountains and the high-altitude Andean glacier. Those who wish can explore the other side of the mountain, where the landscape is even more beautiful, with mountain ranges in shades of yellow, green, violet and sprinkled with snow, all under a blue sky.
  • 11:00 a.m. It’s time to head back to Quesoyuni, and this time it will be easier, taking approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • After enjoying the beautiful scenery, we will board the bus to return to Cusco, but not before enjoying a delicious lunch in the village of “Hanchipata”, with Novo Andino cuisine.
  • At approximately 5:00 p.m., we will arrive at Cusco’s Plaza de Regocijo.
